TIMEFRAME

Science World: After Dark is a monthly event where adults ages 19+ can enjoy the galleries, science shows and the space of Science World at their leisure, without children in the space. Attendees can also see an OMNIMAX movie in the largest domed theatre in the world, and purchase both alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks during their visit.

The purpose of this project was to redesign both the After Dark's logo and posters, as well as creating social media posts (for Instagram, Twitter and Facebook) and digital banner ads at various sizes. The new visuals had to align with the new Science World brand which had been released a few months prior.

THE DESIGN PROCESS

For the new visuals, I wanted to take a very 'science-y' approach; something that science lovers could potentially catch onto, but would still be appealing to those who aren't as invested in the topic. Since most of the posters would be placed throughout Vancouver, I wanted it to be colourful and eye-catching.

While conducting research about all things science related, I came across an image of a colourful brain scan. That was sort of the 'a-ha' moment for me. Most of the colours that were displayed on the image were already part of Science World's secondary colour palette... it was as if it was meant to be! I had also come across an article talking about the "neurochemicals
of happiness", describing molecules such as dopamine, oxytocin, serotonin and endorphins. To further expand on the idea of the brain scan, I included molecule forms within the design as well.

CHALLENGES & TAKEAWAYS

It was interesting to be redesigning a certain element that portrayed Science World while following an existing brand guide. I feel like being constrained to following these guides made me think outside of the box. I don't think that would have come up with the same design if these constraints weren't put in place.
